Every hex screw in your workshop was cut to one of two systems, and the key from the other one will damage it. This guide explains how to tell which system a machine uses, why the wrong key rounds screws even when it seems to fit, and how to decide whether you need metric keys, imperial keys or both.

The pattern: anything designed in the metric world or in the last fifty years is metric, almost without exception. Imperial survives in three places - American products built to inch standards, British engineering from before metrication, and the enthusiast worlds that maintain both.
Why the wrong key ruins the screw
Hex sizes in the two systems fall close but almost never equal, and the near misses are the trap. A 5/16in socket measures 7.94mm - an 8mm key will not enter it, but the reverse pairing puts a 7.94mm key in an 8mm socket with 0.06mm of slack. It enters. It even turns, lightly. The pairs that cause most of the damage: 2mm and 5/64in (1.98mm), 4mm and 5/32in (3.97mm), 5.5mm and 7/32in (5.56mm), 8mm and 5/16in (7.94mm), 10mm and 3/8in (9.53mm). Full conversion tables for every size are in our Allen key sizes chart.
The test that settles it at the bench: the correct key slides in with no rattle and turns with no rotational slack. If it wobbles before you load it, it is the other system's key - stop before the torque goes on.
The awkward cases
Modern American vehicles went metric decades ago - a current Ford or Harley clone kit is metric fasteners throughout - but genuine Harley-Davidson stayed proudly imperial far longer than the rest of the industry, and restoration parts follow the original spec. On American vehicles, check rather than assume in either direction.
Guitars split by origin: US-built Fender and Gibson truss rods and saddles are imperial; the same brands' Mexican, Japanese and Korean production is frequently metric. A guitar tech's kit needs both systems in the small sizes, which is where 3/64in to 1/8in and 1.27mm to 3mm earn their keep.
Mixed rebuilds are the strongest case for owning both: a classic bike with a modern electronic ignition, an old lathe with a new motor mount, a vintage amp with replacement hardware. One machine, two systems, and the fastest way to tell which screw is which is the no-rattle test above.
What to actually buy
If your work is modern - furniture, bikes, printers, current vehicles - a 13 piece metric set covering 1.27mm to 10mm handles everything, and one that includes the 3.5mm, 4.5mm and 5.5mm half sizes handles the components most sets cannot. Frequently asked questions
Is there a universal Allen key that fits both? No, and be wary of anything claiming it. The systems' sizes interleave rather than align; a key can only be cut to one measurement. What exists is owning both ranges - which is what the 26 piece combined format is.
Are Whitworth machines the same as imperial? Whitworth is a British thread standard, and its bolts mostly use spanner flats rather than hex sockets - but where socket screws appear on older British machinery, they take standard imperial hex keys. The spanners differ; the Allen keys do not.
My key is stamped 5/32 but measures about 4mm - is it worn? Probably not: 5/32in is 3.97mm, so a healthy 5/32 key measures a hair under 4mm. This is the near-miss pairing in action - and why measuring alone can mislead without the conversion chart.
